Democratic societies depend on the ability of diverse people to live, work, and solve problems together despite disagreement. Yet when citizens become trapped in cycles of position and counter-position, possibilities often narrow and conflict intensifies. Collaborative Democracy explores a different approach. Rather than treating positions as truths to defend, it treats them as opportunities for inquiry—helping citizens discover the needs, concerns, and aspirations that lie beneath disagreement and create solutions that adversarial dynamics often fail to see.
Democratic reconstruction requires capacities that adversarial systems alone cannot provide. Collaborative Democracy represents one pathway toward developing those capacities. Collaborative Democracy does not eliminate conflict, disagreement, or difference. Instead, it seeks to transform difference into a source of learning, creativity, innovation, and shared problem solving.
